The route to Baitel da l’Abless
The hike to Baitel da l’Abless starts from car park no. 5 in the Freita area.
After the petrol station, take the small road on the left that climbs towards Larix Park. Shortly before reaching the park, you will find the trail and signs for Baitel da l’Abless, including the estimated walking time.
The trail is wide and well marked. The climb is steady and demanding, but there are no particular technical difficulties.
For approximately one hour, the route runs entirely through the forest. In July, this section is especially beautiful because of the many wildflowers along the trail, including wood cranesbill, bearded bellflower, alpine rose, arnica and many other species.
After about one hour of continuous climbing, the trail levels out and rises above the tree line. From this point, following the signs, it takes approximately another thirty minutes to reach the baitel.
This section of the hike is pleasant and highly panoramic. The route follows the slopes of Monte della Neve and continues almost level towards Baitel da l’Abless, with a few sections of very gentle descent.
Along the route, you may meet mountain bikers or e-bike riders coming from Passo d’Eira or Valle delle Mine. The landscape gradually opens up, with views stretching across the Livigno valley towards the Bernina Range.
After approximately thirty minutes of walking at altitude, you reach a junction. Continuing straight leads towards Baitel dali Fema and Valle delle Mine. To reach Baitel da l’Abless, instead, begin the descent. The destination is now visible just below the trail, approximately fifty metres lower down.

Baitel da l’Abless
Baitel da l’Abless is beautifully located right at the edge of the forest. The shelter is well equipped both inside and outside and is an ideal place to stop for a break before continuing the hike.
Outside, there are tables, benches and a water trough. Inside, the baitel retains the simple, practical atmosphere of a traditional mountain shelter, with a table, benches, a stove, a cooking area and a loft where hikers can spend the night using their own sleeping bags.
Baitel da l’Abless is always open and is self-managed. Hikers are free to use it, but for this very reason it must be treated with care and respect. Anyone using the stove must collect their own firewood. Before leaving, visitors should clean and tidy the shelter, take all rubbish with them and treat everything inside and outside with care.
The baitel is available for everyone to use: leaving it as we would like to find it is the simplest and most important rule.
The return to Livigno
After the stop at the baitel, the hike continues downhill and enters the forest once again. This area is characterised mainly by larch and Swiss stone pine trees, including some centuries-old specimens.
The descent leads towards the valley floor, opposite the Florin district. From here, continue to the right along the trail and road through Wood’n Art Livigno and Larix Park, before returning to car park no. 5 and completing the loop.
